Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) is located in Xi’an, the cradle of Chinese civilization, and terminus of the ancient Silk Road. Originally founded as an institute of science and technology, NPU has now broadened its horizons to become a research-oriented university with a multidisciplinary approach that is internationally recognized for its work in the fields of aeronautics, astronautics, and marine technology. NPU is classed as akey universityin China’s 985 and 211 Projects, and is affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It is also a member of the“Excellent Union 9 (E9)”in China.

Over more than 70 years NPU has built an outstanding academic reputation encapsulated in its motto of " Loyalty，Integrity，Courage and Perseverance", and reflected in its spirit of “Strong Preparation，Diligent Effort，Practical Attitude，and Creative Innovation”. As a key base for the cultivation of top-level talent thru research and innovation, NPU has been recognized as a “National Unit of Civilization” and awarded “the National Labor Medal”. Among its pioneering achievements are the first doctorates awarded in six academic disciplines, the first SUAV, ground effect vehicle, AUV and on-board spacecraft computer in China. In 1960 NPU was approved as a key state university, and was subsequently ranked in the top 15 under the government’s 7^thand 8^thFive-year-plans. In the 9^thand 10^thFive-year-plans it was classed as a member of the 211 and 985 Projects respectively. NPU was one of the first universities to establish a graduate school and national university science park, and now hosts the Northwest Institute of Industrial Technology and China's top UAV Research and Development Base.

Since its foundation NPU has graduated 180,000 talents for work in national defense and the economy, including 5,600 Doctors and 34,700 Masters. 34 Doctors or teachers were admitted to the Hundborg Foundation. Among NPU’s alumni 45 are Academicians of the CAE or CAS, 46 have the rank of General while 6 have been recognized as “China’s Ten Outstanding Youth”. A large number of alumni have gone on to play leading roles in the fields of research and manufacturing.
