In 1958, Wang Daheng, an Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, founded the Changchun Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (renamed as Changchun University of Science and Technology in 2002, hereinafter as CUST). Now, by adhering to its philosophy of "Clinging to Lofty Aspiration, Encouraging Perseverance and Self-improvement, Unifying Knowledge into Action, Striving for Remarkable Achievements", CUST has been developed into a teaching and research public key university, which attaches importance to the coordination between multiple disciplines of engineering, science, arts, economics, management and law. With its optical-electronic technology as the most striking feature, it is known as "the cradle of Chinese optical talents". Its discipline of optical engineering has always been in the leading position in China.
CUST is featured by its powerful scientific research strength in the fields of laser technology, optical-electronic instruments, testing, communications, advanced manufacturing, computer applications, optoelectronic materials, nano-materials, bio-medical engineering and among others. It also has outstanding achievements in humanities and social scientific research such as economics, management, law, and Chinese language and literature.
CUST has a powerful teaching team with international vision headed by an Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Following the "Virtuous, Learned, Truthful, Innovative" school motto, it cultivates high-quality specialized talents with innovative spirit and engineering application ability. There are 27,493 full-time students, including 1,115 doctoral students, 6,312 master's students and 19,861 undergraduates.
The educational cooperation and academic relationship network of CUST covers Europe, America, Asia, and Africa. It has established friendly and cooperative relations with more than 100 universities and research institutions in more than 20 countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Russia, Japan, South Korea, and Nigeria. Over the years, about 3,700 international students from 108 countries have studied at CUST.
