About Our SCUT

South China University of Technology (SCUT) is one of China’s leading universities.  It operates under the direct leadership of the State Ministry of Education.  It is a member of Project 985 and Project 211 which qualifies it as a top institution of teaching and research.  Since 2012, SCUT has held a place in the top 500 of QS World University Rankings.  In their 2015 listing, South China University of Technology ranked in the top 400 integrally and in the top 50 in engineering. US. News & World Report published 2016 Best Global Universities, and SCUT ranked in 395, with Agriculture science, engineering, and chemistry ranked in 40,41 and 69 respectively these fields.  SCUT is also a national key university which allows it to independently offer and reward Chinese government scholarships.  In 2013, SCUT was among the first group accredited for the Study in China Model Base by the State Ministry of Education.  The international status of SCUT has improved dramatically making it competitive enough to play a role globally.

SCUT is located in Guangzhou which is very near Hong Kong and Macau.  It has two campuses:  the north campus and the south campus.  The Wushan campus is located in the Tianhe District of Guangzhou.  It is an attractive area with rolling hills, lakes, lush greenery, and brilliant flowers.  This campus has a mixture of both traditional and modern architecture with a truly collegiate feel.  The HEMC campus is located in the recently built University Town of Panyu District.  It has an open and spacious environment filled with beautiful landscaping and innovative and modern architecture.

Since its establishment in 1952, SCUT has developed into a major, comprehensive university that offers multiple disciplines of study including science, engineering, business, management, liberal arts, law, bio-medical science, and art design.  It is currently composed of 27 colleges offering 79 Bachelor degree programs, 193 Master degree programs, and 107 Ph.D. programs. SCUT comprises 4,555 faculty members and 43,000 full time students. Since its founding over 290,000 students have graduated from these programs through the years.  Many of these graduates have gone on to become technological mainstays, distinguished entrepreneurs, and leading politicians.  SCUT has appropriately been called “a cradle of engineers” and “a birthplace of entrepreneurs”.

SCUT strives to be an exceptional example for the entire international university community.  It is active in academic exchange and dedicated to promoting collaboration with more than 100 overseas universities.  In addition, SCUT has co-constructed two Confucius Institutes, one with Lancaster University in the UK and the other with the University of Idaho in the US.  In 2015, SCUT had more than 2,200 international students from 130 countries around the globe.  Most of the students in the Chinese language program continue their studies in undergraduate or graduate programs after passing the required Chinese proficiency exam. The School of International Education (SIE) is responsible for recruiting, managing and teaching international students.  In addition to both long- and short-term Chinese language and culture programs, SIE also offers degree courses like Bachelor of Arts in Chinese as a Foreign Language and Master of Journalism and Communication in the field of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages.

Guided by the university motto of “Study Extensively, Reflect Carefully, Discriminate Clearly, Practice Earnestly”, we believe that SCUT is paving a wider path to a better tomorrow.

The School of International Education (SIE) is an international student administrative organization of South China University of Technology (SCUT), which integrates with international student education, administration and the academic research. Since its establishment in July 2004, SIE has enjoyed steady growth and has expanded considerably in both its number of student and teaching and researching strength.

Each section of SIE has its own distinctive responsibilities so as to provide better service in student enrolment and administration, the designing and teaching of the Chinese Language programs, as well as accommodation and other consultation services. We handle international student affairs, including recruitment, enrollment, residence permit, management of student profiles, student consultation, accommodation, Chinese teaching and logistics services, etc.

One of SIE’s missions is to provide high value-added language education and training programs to help the international students to improve their competitiveness in the new knowledge-based economy where China plays a significant role. General Chinese is offered on four levels, which students can select according to their language proficiency. It is a course to be completed in 1-2 months, 1 semester or 1 academic year. It helps to build a solid foundation of Chinese proficiency in all four language skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking, as well as the study skills required to be a successful student in a university in China. Content-based Chinese programs are designed to, through both Chinese language study and on the field work, provide students professional knowledge on language in the areas of science and technology, IT, business and other applied skills. In addition, we deliver Cultural tour and Summer/Winter Camp programs to meet various needs of our learners.

SIE also offers Undergraduate Programs with Medium of English. The programs are designed for students who would like to pursue high quality degree courses of English as teaching medium, as well as an intercultural experience and exploration in China. All courses are delivered in English by highly qualified lecturers and original English textbooks and teaching materials are used. Students who satisfy all the conditions prescribed by SCUT will be awarded Bachelor degrees. The first batch of programs available includesB.Eng. in Computer Science and technology, B.Eng. in Civil Engineering, B.Eng. in Environment Engineering, B.A. in International Economics and Trade.

Our dedicated teachers had been engaged in teaching international students long before SIE was founded. With over 10 years of practice, our team is enriched in the teaching experiences which lead to profound teaching skills. If you are interested in learning at SIE, please feel free to contact us and we are looking forward to your prospective study in Guangzhou, the heart of Southern China.
